Drowning Injuries

Children love to play in swimming pools, but they often do not understand the dangers a pool can pose. In the blink of an eye, a child’s life can change drastically because he or she has fallen in the water. If the child was able to gain access to a swimming pool because of someone’s negligence, that person can be held liable for any injury or death to the child.

swimming pool drowningThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than one in four fatal drowning victims are children aged 14 and under. In fact, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children in that age range. Children ages one to four years old are most likely to drown in a residential swimming pool after being out of sight of a caregiver for fewer than five minutes.

Furthermore, for every one child who dies from drowning, four children receive emergency department care for nonfatal near-drowning injuries. Children who survive a submersion incident may still face life-long problems including brain damage, memory problems, learning disabilities and loss of basic functioning.

According to the CDC, people who have a swimming pool in their yard should have an isolation pool fence at least four feet high that separates the pool area from the rest of the yard and the house. Fences should be self-closing and self-latching, with the latches out of children’s reach.

The Killino Firm is concerned with making sure that our children are safe while they play. That is why we filed a nationwide class action lawsuit against Mattel to force the toy maker to pay for the testing of children who were at risk of lead poisoning from its products. In 2007, Mattel recalled 1.5 million toys after it was discovered that they contained lead paint, which is toxic and can cause irreversible brain damage and other injuries in children.

At The Killino Firm we fight so that children can be kept safe from companies or people that want to save a few pennies but in the process put children’s lives at risk. We represent the children of families across the United States.

From CNN to ABC to Fox and around the world, we make the news because we are dedicated to assuring that our children feel safe and secure. That’s The Killino Firm Difference.
